Ahn Se-young’s final opponent is Zhong Tianyupei…a nemesis

Ahn Se-young (21, Samsung Life Insurance), who is seeking her second Asian Games badminton title in 29 years, has found her opponent for the women’s singles final.

Following the team event, she will face her nemesis Chen Yufei (China) for gold.

World No. 3 Chen Yufei defeated Japan’s Aya Ohori 2-1 (18-21 21-10 21-8) in the women’s singles quarterfinals of the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games at Binjiang Gymnasium in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China on Saturday.

It was an unexpected struggle. Chen Yufei’s ranking gap suggested an easy win, but that was not to be. The first game was a close one, 18-21.

I found my groove in game two. I jumped out to an early 15-6 lead and eventually took game two 21-10 to even the score. Game 3 was another 21-8 victory.

Earlier in the day, Ahn booked her ticket to the final with a 2-0 (21-10 21-13) victory over He Bingjiao (China, World No. 5). Ahn dominated the match with a wide defensive range and sharp attacks, ending the match in 42 minutes.

It’s been 29 years since a South Korean women’s badminton player reached the singles final at an Asian Games since Hwang Soo-hyun in 1994. She went on to win the gold medal. It was the last Asian Games gold medal for South Korea in women’s singles.

If Ahn Seyoung wins the gold medal, she will recreate the myth of Suh Bang-hyun. She already stood at the top of the podium in the women’s team event. The last Korean to win a double was Suh Bang-hyun in 1994.
