China disqualified for ‘major accident’ gold medalist, women’s medley relay disqualified for wrong start…South Korea finishes second overall

Heavy favorite China has been disqualified. Korea heads to the final in second place overall.

The South Korean women’s medley relay team will compete for a medal in the final after finishing second overall in the women’s 400m medley relay at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games at the Olympic Sports Center Swimming Pool in Hangzhou, China, on Monday (Sept. 29).

Korea started the day with Lee Eun-ji in the second lane of the three-lane backstroke, but after 50 meters, they were in third place behind China and Japan. Kim Hye-jin of the No. 2 breaststroke moved into second place at 200 meters. Park Soo-jin, the No. 3 swimmer in the butterfly, lost the second spot to China again, but Jung So-eun, the last swimmer in the freestyle, kept up the pace and Korea finished the race in 4:06.47.

China was the first to touch the touchpad after the upset, followed by Japan and Korea.

After the race, shocking news broke. China had been disqualified for a false start. China’s No. 1 swimmer Wang Xuexue, who was competing in the backstroke, was ruled to have started faster than everyone else.

As a result, South Korea will head to the final in second place overall, behind Japan (4:02.33).
