Korea loses 1-2 to Spain. Ends 2023 Davis Cup Finals with 3 losses

The South Korean men’s tennis team ended the Davis Cup Finals 2023 with three losses. Once again, the dream of winning the main draw (Finals) for the first time was not realized. The fact that the singles players did not win a single match in the tournament was decisive. The eight nations that will compete in the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga, Spain, in November have also been selected.

The team lost 1-2 to Spain in the final Group C match of the Davis Cup Finals 2023 at the Pabellón Fuente de San Luis in Valencia, Spain on Sunday (Nov. 17). It was a matchup of two teams that had already been eliminated from the group stage with two losses. Spain, who were confident of making it past the group stage with ease, had their pride completely crumpled in front of their home fans after back-to-back losses to the Czech Republic and Serbia.

Korea once again fielded the same lineup as in the first match against Serbia and the second match against the Czech Republic, with Hong Seong-chan (Sejong City Hall) playing first singles, Kwon Sun-woo (Dangjin City Hall) playing second singles, and Nam Ji-sung and Song Min-gyu (Sejong City Hall-KDB Industrial Bank) playing third doubles. This was done to keep Kwon Soon-woo and Hong Seong-chan, who will be playing singles at the Asian Games immediately following the Davis Cup Finals, fresh.

Spain’s doubles lineup included Zapata Miralles at No. 1, Alejandro Davydovic Fokina at No. 2, and Marcel Granollers-Ramos Vinolas at No. 3.

Singles was also a close affair. Hong Sung-chan lost 4-6 5-7 to Miralles and Kwon Soon-woo lost 4-6 4-6 to Fokina. Both players competed in the first through third sets, but ultimately ended the tournament with three losses.

The pair of Nam Ji-sung and Song Min-gyu won a close match 6-7(2) 7-6(6) 10-8. It was the first win of the tournament for the Nam-Song pair. Last year, the pair went 1-2 in all three matches of the Finals Group Stage, and with their win this year, they became the first South Korean pair in history to win back-to-back Davis Cup main draws. 온라인바카라

In the end, South Korea finished the tournament with three losses. They were one of three teams to go undefeated in the tournament, along with Sweden in Pool A and Switzerland in Pool B. In Group C, the Czech Republic ended up topping the group with three wins, while Serbia, with a 2-1 record, is also headed to the finals. Spain suffered a shock elimination at home. The November Finals will also be held in Spain, and it was a bit of a sour note for Spanish fans.

Canada and Italy in Pool A, Great Britain and Australia in Pool B, and the Netherlands and Finland in Pool D finished first and second, respectively, with the Czech Republic and Serbia in the final four. The United States was eliminated from Group D with one win and two losses.

Team Korea’s next competition will be the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, starting on September 24. Kwon Soon-woo and Hong Sung-chan will compete in the singles. The tennis competition schedule for the Hangzhou Asian Games is scheduled from Sept. 24 to Sept. 30.
