Masan Yongmago pitcher Jang Hyun-seok (19) held a press conference at the Seoul Dragon City Hotel on Thursday to announce his intention to join the major leagues. Already training with the Dodgers’ developmental program, Jang is expected to participate in the MLB Instructional League as early as October.
Maybe he can get a military waiver and cross the Pacific. Jang is the first and only high school player to make the baseball team for the Hangzhou Asian Games in September. One of the best pitchers in baseball during his collegiate career, Jang will be traveling with the adult national team and wearing the Korean flag before he even turns pro.
The Dodgers are excited about Jang’s participation in the tournament. “I think it’s a positive thing for him to play for the national team in international events like the Asian Games and the World Baseball Classic,” said John Dibble, director of scouting for the Pacific region, at the signing press conference. We will be actively supporting him,” said John Dibble, Director of Scouting for the Pacific Region.
If he gets a military waiver and makes it to the major leagues, that’s great. If Jang develops into a quality player once he hits the big leagues, he’ll have an even brighter future. The Dodgers sent a positive message by inviting him to join the national team, and his primary goal is to win a gold medal at the Asian Games.
A prodigious talent at the high school level, Jang has already been through the Dodgers’ development program. “Once he joins the team, we’ll try to figure out his strengths and weaknesses,” Dibble said. Depending on the timing of his visa, he may participate in the training league in October. Currently, the Dodgers have sent him a program, and he is working out accordingly.” He said that the Dodgers are focusing on Jang Hyun-seok’s development.
The Dodgers have a reputation as a pitcher’s club. The Dodgers have produced several pitchers who have gone on to perform at the top of the league, including Clayton Kershaw. That’s why Jang chose the Dodgers. “I heard that the Dodgers are the best pitching organization out of the 30 major league teams, so I chose to join the Dodgers,” he said.
As a sophomore in high school, Jang Hyun-seok threw a 157-mph fastball. In his junior year, he sharpened his curveball, slider, and changeup. Recently, he added a sweeper to his arsenal. It will be interesting to see if Jang can cross the Pacific Ocean after achieving his first goal at the Asian Games.
